The Brass What?..

We are a bunch of mates who got together to form an investment club in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex (UK). We meet at the Ship Public House in Leigh on a monthly basis.

We are the second member of the H&G Investment Club Family and were set up in May 1997. We were initially started as a response to the huge waiting list that was increasing on a daily basis to join the H&G Club. There are 20 of us and we each kicked the fund off with £500 to make an initial kitty of £10,000!! It is a limited life club of 5 years and this means that the investment strategy is different from that of H&G, which is long term.

The name comes from a discussion as to what to call ourselves. It started with the suggestion "monkey and pony" as we all started with a 'monkey' (£500) and were putting in a 'pony' (£25) a month. Sally thought that was silly(!) and suggested "Brass Monkey" - as we were hoping to make some 'brass' out of the deal. Quite frankly, we were getting bored by this time and the £10,000 we had to spend was burning a hole in our pockets so "Brass Monkey" it was!!

The H&G family now consists of 4 clubs..

The H & G Investment Club

The Brass Monkey Investment Club

S.T.I.C.

The Dirty Harry Investment Club

All these clubs originated from an idea by Mark Goodson, also known as Fat Bloke Marge  (or even TMFFatblokemarge - as he is known on the message boards of the Motley Fool (www.fool.co.uk)

Club fact:

Once there were only 2 investment Clubs...
Now look how many there are...

In 1997 there were 300 clubs in the UK. At the beginning of the new Millennium there are over 6000 and growing all the time - see ProShare's Web site (www.proshare.org.uk) for more details.
